by Shana Garcia Rustin, Acoma Pueblo
clay, pigment
4.5” high x 5” wide x 5” deep
Acoma Pueblo potter Shana Garcia Rustin was born in 1969, and is from the Red Corn and Sun Clan. She is a great-granddaughter of Syme & Santana Sanchez, and daughter of Elliott Garcia & Beatrice Garcia.
Shana is self-taught and has mastered the traditional techniques of Acoma Pueblo, with each piece coil built and painted with Yucca brushes. Shana collaborated with Patrick Rustin, and they became well known for their thin wall pottery. A signature creation are her figural pieces of birds with patterned wings. The sculptured swirls of clay are formed into Kiva steps, and overall the imagery represents birds flying over the steps.
