Ned Matilpi was born in Alert Bay in 1957 and is a member of the Lawit’sis Ma’amtagila Band (Turnour Island) and is also Tlingit on his grandmother’s side.
Ned started carving at the age of 25. His style has been influenced by his late father Oscar Matilpi, who was also an artist. Ned has worked with and been inspired by Doug Cranmer, Jimmy John, Jake James, Bruce Alfred, Harold Alfred, and Beau Dick. He is known for his carved masks, panels, poles, and bentwood boxes.
