Rose Chino Garcia was born in Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico in 1928. She was one of the daughters of famed Acoma potter Marie Z. Chino who taught her the art of working the clay into wonderful pieces of art. Rose is known for carrying on the tradition of Acoma pottery established by matriarchs like her mother, and to create pieces characterized by artistic elegance.
Rose’s work has won ribbons at the Santa Fe Indian Market, and her work can be found in private and public collections including the Peabody Museum of Art at Harvard University, the Heard Museum, Phoenix, and the Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa. Her work was featured in Southern Pueblo Pottery, 2000 Artist Biographies by Gregory Schaaf and the foundational Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery published by the Maxwell Museum.
Since her death in 2000, Rose’s creations are becoming more and more difficult to find. Her daughter, Tena Garcia, is carrying on the tradition of this magnificent pottery.
