Jacob Shavings was born in 1958 on Nunivak Island in the Bering Sea of Alaska. Jacob is the son of master carver and keeper of tradition Henry C. Shavings (1924-2016).
Jacob lived a traditional life on Nunivak Island hunting, fishing, and gathering. He started carving at 9 years old, taught by a local elder. That is wehn he fell in love with the arts of Nunivak Island. One of only two ivory carvers on Nunivak, it was important to him to teach the next generation because he worried the artform would not continue.

Jacob was a beloved member of his Alaskan community, and touched the heart of everyone he met.
