Kooyoo Peter was born in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island in 1966. He is the son of renowned Inuit artist Ejetsiaq Peter.
Kooyoo began carving seriously at the age of 18, although he was 13 when he first tried carving a seal. He prefers to work in serpentine and marble, and his favorite subject matter is dancing bears and people in action.
Kooyoo learned to carve from his brother Joanasie, who taught him how to use the axe and file and which part of the stone to remove first. Kooyoo is known for his strong, well-executed pieces and challenging subjects with a sense of movement.
