Ivan Otterlifter (1936-1999) was born in the Pacific Northwest and lived and worked in British Columbia. He began his full time art career in 1964, and continued until his death in 1999. Working primarily in wood, Otterlifter was also an accomplished silversmith and argillite carver. He was often commissioned by Tlingit tribal members to carve important pieces of personal regalia. He was adopted by the Tlingit tribe in the 1970's and give the name Cyot.
