To the Tsimshian First Nation, Laxsgiik (Eagle) represents one of the four primary matrilineal clans. Eagle symbolizes prestige, power, peace, and high-ranking leadership. As well, Eagle is regarded as having the closest connection to the Creator, often acting as a messenger between the spiritual and physical worlds.

Al Zantua is a Washington-based artist, educator, and former principal/interim superintendent at Chief Leschi Schools. Known for his work with Indigenous art, he created the "Standing Eagle Totem" and "Eagle Spirit Mask" that are now in the permanent collection of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Every year he also hand-paints drums for the City of Tacoma's tribal graduates to honor their heritage and accomplishments.
