During the nineteenth century, frontlet headdresses became the principal style of ceremonial headdress among Indigenous peoples in the Northwest Coast of North America. The wood frontlet would have been attached to a rabbit fur hat regaled with sea lion whiskers and a train of ermine tails. Frontlets were worn by high-ranking individuals and conveyed the clan or crest of the wearer.
