The Toolie Family is a notable family of Siberian Yup’ik people from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, specifically from the village of Savoonga. Several family members have been recognized for their community work, cultural preservation, and achievements in sports.
Prominent members of the Toolie family include:
Yaari Toolie-Walker: Originally from Savoonga, she is a tribal healer, psychologist, and author who works to preserve traditional Yupik values. She co-wrote the children's book Let's Play Out!. Her parents are Herman Toolie and Esther Pungowiyi-Toolie.
Crystal Toolie: A Siberian Yupik ultrarunner from Nome who is dedicated to preserving her culture's traditions. She helped reinstate a local Indigenous dance group, following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, Nick Wongittillin.
Jimmie Toolie: Grandfather of respected Yupik elder Conrad Noongwook. He was a whale hunter and community leader.
Mabel Toolie: A traditionally tattooed Siberian Yupik elder from Savoonga who passed away in 2005. She was among the last generation of traditionally tattooed women on St. Lawrence Island.
Miriam Toolie: An Alaska Native photographer whose work was featured by the World Wildlife Fund. Her photos document life on the Bering Sea.
