Heber Reece was born in 1955 in the village of Klemtu, near Bella Bella, British Columbia. When he was twelve, his family moved to Hartly Bay. At this young age, Heber began to explore carving in wood. He continued learning on his own until 1988 when he was enrolled in the ‘Ksan School of Native Art in Hazelton, BC where he studied mask carving with Vernon Stephens. Since then, his teachers have included Victor Reece, Henry Greene, Art Sterritt and Earl Muldoe.

Heber comes from a long line of master carvers and is one of many artists who are preserving their cultural background through their artwork for future generations. Heber works exclusively in wood, carving masks, totems and rattles in the Tsimshian style. He recently worked on a 180' totem pole, the tallest in the world, in Victoria. His work is on display in galleries across the northwest.
