by Charles Harper, Carrier Nation
Charles Harper was born 1955 into the Frog Clan of the Carrier Nation in Prince George, British Columbia. Charles started carving in 1974 and began a lengthy apprenticeship in 1980 under Kwakiutl carvers Lloyd Wadhams and Alfred Seaweed of Alert Bay, B.C. Charles’ work is best characterized by intricate designs with special attention to detail.
Early on Charles developed his own technique and unique style and is widely known for his silver and gold bracelets, pendants, earrings and other jewelry. Charles is also recognized for both his wood and metal carvings, particularly plaques both painted and unpainted, concentrating on birds and fish.
At present, Charles lives and works in Vancouver, where he teaches a number of young Carrier carvers in an attempt to both preserve and pass on the heritage of his peoples.
