Dog Sled Team, 1994 by Mary Seppilu, Yup'ik walrus ivory figures, wolf ruff and leather, scrimshawed design on figures and bone base 4” tall X 11” long X 4” deep
Carving by renowned Yup'ik carver Mary Seppilu. Mary is from Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island. She is well known for carving dog sled teams lead by a woman. Mary carved each dog from a unique piece of walrus ivory adding individual personality and whimsy to every one. Notice the amulet depicting a human hanging from the back of the sled. This amulet is placed there to protect the carver, the musher, and the owner of the artwork.
Sadly, Mary has done limited amount of carving since her husband David Seppilu passed away in 2008. This piece is a wonderful example of Mary’s work, and would be an important addition to a collection.
