Cape Dorset, Nunavut
lithograph, edition 16/50

Oshutsiak Pudlat was born in Amadjuak, Nunavut in 1909. He was the brother of the famous Cape Dorset artist Pudlo Pudlat.

It was not until September of 1980 that he first requested drawing paper, stating that he'd 'like to try'. At the suggestion of Terry Ryan, the print director at Cape Dorset, he tried his hand at illustrating his brother Simeonie's memories of establishing a Lapland reindeer farm in Amadjuak in 1922. This produced a series of remarkably skilled drawings. His works are unique in style and approach. His subject matter includes figures with massive torsos, hunting scenes, and imaginary motifs.

Oshoochiak’s work can be found in both private and permanent collections including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, National Galler of Canada, Ottowa, Ontario, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull, Quebec, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario.

As well, his work is featured in numerous publications including Jean Blodgett’s “In Cape Dorset We Do It This Way: Three Decades of Inuit Printmaking,” Susan Gustavison’s “Arctic Expressions: Inuit Art and the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council,” and Kay Kritzwiser’s “Everything From Mermaid Tales to ‘Copters Inspires Inuit Artists.”
