The sculpture Woman with Roses was created for a solo exhibition at Quintana Galleries in 1985. Tex carved this sculpture while he was here in Portland, Oregon. Portland is the City of Roses, and he was staying with Rose and Cecil Quintana who had a magnificent rose garden with many antique varieties. He was inspired! This piece was acquired by the Quintana's for their private collection. This is the first time this sculpture has been offered for sale.
Mandan/Hidatsa sculptor Tex Wounded Face was born on May 9, 1955 in Walford City, west of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota. Wounded Face received his elementary education in North Dakota, and was admitted to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM in 1971.
From 1971-72, he studied stone sculpture with the renowned Fort Sill Apache Indian artist and educator, Allan Houser. Wounded Face openly acknowledges his admiration and respect for Houser, one of the Nation’s leading Native American artists. Houser was instrumental in encouraging Wounded Face to exhibit his work in competitive exhibitions.
After leaving the Institute of American Indian Arts, Wounded Face continued working in sculpture at his home in North Dakota. Starting in 1973, Wounded Face exhibited his sculpture in Galleries located in Arizona, New Mexico, California, Oregon and Oklahoma. In 1977, he returned to school, attending Arizona State University and ultimately transferring to Boise State University, where he majored in sculpture.
Wounded Face read the spirit of the stone when creating sculptures reflecting the past, present and future of the American Indian. He had a strong personal belief in the artist’s responsibility for education and encouraging aspiring artists. Accordingly, he was involved in the presentation of high school and college seminars and spent several months working as Art Instructor in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Centers.
Wounded Face passed away peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona on July 22, 2012.
