Zuni pottery has a rich history that dates back to the early 1700's and is known for its unique style, complex geometric patterns, and signature motifs. Lost for a time, the Zuni pottery tradition was revived in the 1920s by Daisy Hooee, the granddaughter of Hopi artist Nampeyo. Since then, Zuni pottery has flourished, and Zuni potters have received recognition for their work.
Frogs are a prominent part of Zuni origin mythology, as the earliest Zuni people were said to be "slimy like frogs, with webbed hands & feet." Frogs are often associated with water, rain, and fertility, and are frequently depicted on prayer bowls such as this.
Frogs are part of a medicine that can help with cleansing, emotional healing, and physical healing. As well, Frogs represent life-giving water, which is an essential primordial ingredient.
