Sonny Nehoitewa, Hopi
cottonwood root, pigment, feathers
18" high x 4.5" wide x 3" deep

Crow Mother is called the Mother of all kachinas. She appears in the Powamu ceremony, marking the start of the planting season, a very important rite. Crow Mother is usually portrayed holding a basket of corn. At the start of Powamu, the kachina supervises the initiation of children into the kachina culture.

This spectacular Crow Mother Kachina is carved with the natural flow of the cottonwood root. At the base are relief carved scenes of Crow Mother carrying a basket of corn out of the Kiva, a corn stalk, and in the back an Ogre Kachina who acts as a guardian to Crow Mother.
